5th and 6th grade class

3rd and 4th Grade begin each day with a Biblical devotion, prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Pledge to the Christian Flag. The class then completes its weekly recitations. These recitations include Bible memory verses, manners, poetry, and important terms or facts.

5th Grade Subjects

Reading and Literature: This subject is taught using Memoria Press’s Literature Guides which accompany the classic novels The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Heidi, and Lassie. The subject is also taught using Memoria Press’s Poetry for the Grammar Stage. Students will practice determining meaning of unknown vocabulary using context clues, delivering good oral recitations, understanding literary devices and rhyming structure, accurately identifying the primary theme and central idea of a story, answering logic-level questions, and improving their critical reading analysis.

Language Arts and Spelling: This subject is taught using Memoria Press’s English Grammar Recitation II, Core Skills Language Arts 5, Classical Composition II, and Spelling Workout F. In Grammar, students will memorize and practice basic grammar rules for verbs, pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, predicate nominatives, predicate adjectives, direct objects, and indirect objects, basic grammar rules pertaining to types and parts of sentences, verb phrases and six verb tenses, infinitives and participles, and will practice correctly encoding dictated sentences. In Composition, students will master the ability to retell a story, paraphrasing a text, identification of characters, setting, plot, action, time, place, manner, cause, suffering, reversal, and recognition within a narrative, expand their vocabularies, display proficiency in developing a topic sentence, properly format an essay, and display proficiency in sentence and paragraph formation. In Spelling, students will demonstrate mastery of level-appropriate word lists, correctly use prefixes and suffixes, correctly use homonyms and abbreviations, master digraphs, and understand syllabication.

Math: This subject is taught using Saxon Math 5. Students will practice solving word problems. Students will add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers. Students will practice identifying equivalent fractions, and converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students will practice using estimations, variables, expressions, equations, geometry, measurement, and probability.

Science: This subject is taught is using Memoria Press’s The Book of Insects and Peterson First Guide: Insects. Students will compare and contrast, master and memorize facts, gain knowledge about eight orders of insects, master metamorphosis, practice observing and sketching, display knowledge about habitats, and master insect anatomy.

6th Grade Subjects

Reading and Literature: This subject is taught using Memoria Press’s Literature Guides which accompany the classic novels The Door in the Wall, Adam of the Road, Robin Hood, and King Arthur. This subject is also taught using Poetry for the Grammar Stage. Students will practice determining meaning of unknown vocabulary using context clues, delivering good oral recitations, understanding literary devices and rhyming structure, accurately identifying the primary theme and central idea of a story, answering logic-level questions, and improving their critical reading analysis.

Language Arts and Spelling: This subject is taught using Memoria Press’s English Grammar Recitation III, Core Skills Language Arts 6, Classical Composition III: Chreia & Maxim Stage, and Spelling Workout G. In Grammar, the students will memorize and practice basic grammar rules for verbs, pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, predicate nominatives, predicate adjectives, direct objects, and indirect objects, practice identifying the subject of a sentence, master eight pronoun types. master adverb usage, master transitive and intransitive verbs, and practice correctly encode dictated sentences. In Composition, students will be introduced to invention, produce expositional writing, master identification of basic plot components, improve mechanics of writing, display a more developed and consistent writing style, improve in usage of syntax, advance in usage of figures of description and speech, and show coherence in presentation and flow of ideas. In Spelling, students will master level-appropriate word lists, correctly spell compound and hyphenated words, correctly spell Latin and Greek roots, master prefixes and suffixes, and understand syllabication.

Math: This subject is taught using Saxon Math 6. Students will to practice simplifying expressions containing parentheses; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing signed numbers; working with exponents, square roots, geometric formulas, ratios, percentages, fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals.

Science: This subject is taught using Memoria Press’s The Book of Birds and Peterson First Guide: Birds. Also used is Exploring the History of Medicine by J.H. Tiner. Students will understand bird communities, nests, eggs; practice observing birds in their area; gain knowledge about habitats; demonstrate in-depth knowledge of bird anatomy; identify 31 common birds; identify 31 common bird songs; understand biodiversity, migration, and extinction; display knowledge in major advances in medicine, penicillin, and anesthesia; and be introduced to key scientists in the development of modern medicine

Shared Subjects

Christian Studies: This subject is taught using the Memoria Press Christian Studies Program, Timeline Program, and The Golden Children’s Bible. Over two years of coursework, students will memorize over 200 facts, memorize over 60 Bible verses, discuss and memorize various Old Testament and New Testament stories and key characters, and display familiarity with time period geography and culture.

Latin: This subject is taught using Memoria Press’s Lingua Angelica. Students will memorize grammar forms and vocabulary; apply correct grammar to basic translation; understand grammatical concepts; be introduced to parsing; display working knowledge of 1st-5th noun declensions; display working knowledge of 1st and 2nd declension adjectives; display working knowledge of 1st and 2nd conjugations: present and perfect systems; display working knowledge of the "to be" verb: present and perfect systems; memorize over 200 vocabulary words; memorize many English derivatives; understand syntax; display working knowledge of nominative and accusative cases; display working knowledge of complementary infinitive; understand subject/verb agreement; understand noun/adjective agreement; and display working knowledge of predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

American Studies and Geography: This subject will be taught using biographies of great Americans and Geography II. Students will demonstrate full mastery of the U.S. presidents by name in order of service; gain exposure to various time periods and events, be familiar with historic Americans, master significant dates, and give ancient and modern equivalencies. In Geography, students will display working knowledge of the physical features, culture, and history of countries studied, gain introductory knowledge on world geography, map each country in the Americas, Asia, Oceania, and Sub-Saharan Africa with correct spelling, and know the capital of each country studied.

Classical Studies: This subject is taught using Memoria Press’s Famous Men of Rome and Famous Men of the Middle Ages. Over two years of coursework, students will master over 200 facts of Roman and medieval history; be able to name key people and events of Roman and Medieval history; memorize significant dates of Roman and medieval history; gain insight into Roman and medieval history and culture; learn about Roman legends; correlate the Roman Republic to the formation of the American government; gain understanding of connections between cultures and historical causation; describe European culture in the Middle Ages; memorize England’s sovereigns; understand transitions from the Roman empire to the feudal society; and describe the life of Mohammed and the rise of Islam.

5th and 6th Graders also participate in Specials. These include Chapel, Music, P.E. and Art.
